March 2023 – Eyes, Buildings & Summer Veggies

March general meeting held 3/19/23 at the 99+1 Senior Center was attended by 15 people. Minutes from the February meeting we approved and accepted.  AnaMarie read the financial report and it was awesome to see we now have enough money in the general fund to do several projects for our elderly.

The eye project headed by Paul and Mary Beardslee was quiet last month, but that won’t be the case after the upcoming Lyons eye clinic on April 29th at Dr. Israel’s International Hospital.  This service is free for the entire community.  On April 30,2023 Dr. Abbud from Ensenada will be here in San Felipe to measure for cataracts and pterygiums surgeries later in May to take place at Dr. Abasolo’s operating room.

Better Together received a generous donation of money from the Pickleball fund raising event that took place at El Dorado Ranch.  They also collected food items, sundries and paper products for the Bag Ladies.  Thanks to Jill Fort for the follow-up.

Harry Fry was able to sell the donated trailer and french doors we had in storage.  Harry also located a propane refrigerator and two propane tanks for one of our new elderly lady’s.

1.  Work began on pouring the cement front walkway and hand railing.

2.  Two roofs are being repaired.

3.  Trees have been trimmed.

4.  A bano door was refurbished and installed. Along with and old a/c opening insulated, new wood installed to close up the opening, sealed and painted.

5.  A new ramada will soon be built to cover a home.

Blues for Hunger also donated 12 bags of food collected at a recent event here in San Felipe.  Thank you to Joyce and Richard Lawrence who always remember the bag lady program.

Bag Ladies had 14 elderly families that we are now serving twice a month all year with eggs, chicken, fresh fruits and vegetables, protein drinks and a small parcel of staples.  We also help them obtain small medical items.  If they get to a point that they can only have liquids we help the family to obtain what is needed.  We enjoy a nice visit and pray before we leave them.  Some of the elderly have been in the program since it began 2008 or 2009. Originally the program only provided this service from June through September.  Through generous donations we have now taken this program to cover the entire year. Everyone who participates comes away feeling so blessed by all we receive from the people.

If you would be interested in participating come to the next meeting April 16, 2023 at the 99+1 Senior Center at 12:30 or contact a member of the Better Together group.
