March 2023 – Eyes, Buildings & Summer Veggies

March general meeting held 3/19/23 at the 99+1 Senior Center was attended by 15 people. Minutes from the February meeting we approved and accepted.  AnaMarie read the financial report and it was awesome to see we now have enough money in the general fund to do several projects for our elderly.

The eye project headed by Paul and Mary Beardslee was quiet last month, but that won’t be the case after the upcoming Lyons eye clinic on April 29th at Dr. Israel’s International Hospital.  This service is free for the entire community.  On April 30,2023 Dr. Abbud from Ensenada will be here in San Felipe to measure for cataracts and pterygiums surgeries later in May to take place at Dr. Abasolo’s operating room.

Better Together received a generous donation of money from the Pickleball fund raising event that took place at El Dorado Ranch.  They also collected food items, sundries and paper products for the Bag Ladies.  Thanks to Jill Fort for the follow-up.

Harry Fry was able to sell the donated trailer and french doors we had in storage.  Harry also located a propane refrigerator and two propane tanks for one of our new elderly lady’s.

1.  Work began on pouring the cement front walkway and hand railing.

2.  Two roofs are being repaired.

3.  Trees have been trimmed.

4.  A bano door was refurbished and installed. Along with and old a/c opening insulated, new wood installed to close up the opening, sealed and painted.

5.  A new ramada will soon be built to cover a home.

Blues for Hunger also donated 12 bags of food collected at a recent event here in San Felipe.  Thank you to Joyce and Richard Lawrence who always remember the bag lady program.

Bag Ladies had 14 elderly families that we are now serving twice a month all year with eggs, chicken, fresh fruits and vegetables, protein drinks and a small parcel of staples.  We also help them obtain small medical items.  If they get to a point that they can only have liquids we help the family to obtain what is needed.  We enjoy a nice visit and pray before we leave them.  Some of the elderly have been in the program since it began 2008 or 2009. Originally the program only provided this service from June through September.  Through generous donations we have now taken this program to cover the entire year. Everyone who participates comes away feeling so blessed by all we receive from the people.

If you would be interested in participating come to the next meeting April 16, 2023 at the 99+1 Senior Center at 12:30 or contact a member of the Better Together group.

Better Together Eye Program Report

This past weekend Paul and Mary attended the Lions Eye Clinic. Over 200 people we
seen at this clinic. We received over 50 names of people believed to need surgery. On Sunday, Dr Marcelo Abbud and 2 of his staff came from Ensenada and examined 62 patients at Dr Abasolo’s office. Rita Casey helped us coordinate the exams
which went very smoothly. We greatly appreciate Rita’s help on Sunday. Over the weekend, we identified 36 new cataracts and 18 pterigiums. In addition we
have 21 patients who are waiting to have their 2nd cataracts removed. In March of 2024, we hope to provide 44 cataract surgeries and 18 pterigiums surgeries. Our surgical cost for these surgeries will be $28,716. dollars. 21 of the patients who are receiving 2nd cataract surgeries will contribute 7,000 pesos toward
their surgery if they can do so. Michele Cumberland has contacted Operation Blessings to inquire about a donation
and is waiting to hear back. Jean Westburg has spoken to Rotary of San Felipe about a possible donation. I am
contacting them with details of our needs.
We will be proceeding to create a Go Fund Me request. Please pray that we will be able to provide these needed surgeries for our
community.

Bag Lady Notes:  October 8, 2023

I want to thank everyone who was a part of the team this summer.  They all went over and above to insure the elderly needs were met.

We lost two of our beautiful ladies this August.  We miss them dearly but know they are both are angels in heaven watching over the Better Together.  Both families extended their thank you to our group for helping and always caring for their loved ones.

#1…D:  She had a telephone that stopped working and needed help.  Judd, our newest bag boy, took her phone to Telcel and to another phone repair shop.  They decided she needed a new battery and it was ordered, however, after the battery was installed the phone would not hold a charge.  One of our bag guys had a phone that he longer used and offered to give it to D.  A new SIM card was purchased and 100 pesos for minutes were added.  D was so happy to receive the phone.

#2…A’s house was robbed during the hurricane and their TV including all attachments and a bicycle were taken.  Better Together stepped up with a 50” TV, however it would not connect to the current wiring.  We made a few calls and was able to obtain another TV which did not require a lot of special connections and they now have a TV.

#3…A’s microwave went out.  After several attempts to purchase on here in San Felipe his sponsor ordered an analog type on Amazon.  When it arrived we put felt markers on it and gave A instructions on how to use it.  A is blind for those who don’t know him.

#4…V our sweet lady out by the new cemetery has taken a caretaker job at a playa in north San Felipe.  I have not spoken with her and we have suspended delivery until she returns to her home closer to San Felipe.

#5…T and I have moved to the upper building.  A cement block structure without a roof, windows or a door has been constructed for them by another group and will be finished sometime.  They are still counting on Better Together for the ramada to cover the other structure.  We also provided several tanks of propane and jugs of drinking water.  They seem very happy in their new place.

#6…R and A are doing well and he plan to do some shrimp fishing.  R and M will move back to their place as soon as it cools down.  They will still go to their niece’s home to eat.  A is doing okay,  her son J fell through the roof after the hurricane when he was trying to repair the roof.  A and family are well.

#7… C and L are still in Mexicali.  We have helped them with ensure and depends over the summer.  Lupe is down to 80 pounds and eats very little.

#8… New person: C How we met….Bag Ladies were at A’s and this lady came running down the street asking for food.  She has no food or money.  She had been hit by a car several months back and is still recovering from the injuries.  I told her we did not have any extra food that day but if I could return the next day I would try to help her.  Wereturned the next day and took her information.  We went shopping for her and explained we needed to get this approved by the group, but would help her until we could get it approved.  She has two disabled adult children living with her and she is a widow. She owns her home and it is very nice.  She is the mother of 13 children and they are not in the area to help.  It does appear she has friends in the neighborhood.  We need to vote on accepting her in BL.

#9… I got a call Saturday from a lady who’s 63 year old father has cancer and is need of diapers and ensure.  We will do an intake Monday.  Not sure if he needs food assistance.

#10…October delivery dates 11th and 25th…..November dates 8th and 22nd.  I will be out of town for November 22nd and need someone to take over for that delivery.

December deliveries are 6th and 20th

#11….Always need pantry items….toilet paper, dish soap, hand soap, shampoo, Clorox, pasta and sauce, tuna, soups, instant coffee, hot chocolate packets, oatmeal, boxed milk, rice, beans, oil, canned fruit and  soups.  NO OUTDATED FOOD CAN BE USED.

April 29th the Flying Samaritan’s will return for a Lions Club Eye Clinic The clinic begins at 8am at the International Hospital in Los Arcos community, San Felipe, Baja Norte Mexico.

April is the time for the Lyons Club and the Flying Samaritans from California to provide the people of San Felipe a free eye examine.  If needed glasses as well.  If it is determined the patient has cataracts or other eye issues the Better Together eye project group of San Felipe along with great doctors and nurses from Ensenada, Mexico will help to make this happen.  The eye projects one for the elderly and one for the children are all private donations.  Our group is very blessed to have this help from all the donors.

A little bit of information is taken from the minutes from our February meeting.

Eye Project Report –Paul and Mary Beardslee

Minimal work was done in December and January.

Paul delivered eye drops and a couple glucometers and supplies to 3 eye patients.

In January, Paul took 6 adults to Ensenada. 4 people had laser treatments and one patient had 2 eye injections for diabetic retinopathy. The patient was able to pay for one of the two injections. Laser surgery and injections cost $810.00 US plus travel.

January 31, Paul went with 4 other vehicles, driven by Jim H, Mark L, Jerry O, and Eric H. to transport 10 children and guardians for exams by Dr. Arias to Ensenada. All the children received new prescriptions for new lenses. These glasses are being made by Dr. Sandoval in San Felipe. One of the children were seen for the first 2 time. Almost all the new glasses have been delivered. Dr. Arias gave a discount this time on his exams. He charged 450 Pesos for each exam rather than $600 Pesos that he normally charges.

The following day we plan to have Dr. Abbud come to Dr. Abasolo’s office to examine people and measure for cataract lenses. With the generous donations we have received we plan to do cataract and pterygium surgeries beginning May 19th and continuing for several days.

April – 2019

Hello all, The season is ending but it has been extremely productive as far as what Better Together has been able to do with and for the people of San Felipe.  We have a few projects to finish but have had to push a couple of large ones back to the fall due to time constraints and monetary shortfalls.  Our prayer is the summer will fill our coffers to the point where we can commence projects again when most of us return. The minutes are attached.  Please note that the financials are at the end of the minutes.  Also please note that we have a significant amount of labor still owed to us from the Nueva Cancion rehab center.  We will continue to use them for our roofing projects next season.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to let us know.   Have a blessed and Christ filled summer.

In His service,

Eric and Gloria Hodel
Coordinators for Better Togethers

EYE PROJECT REPORT – submitted by Mary Beardslee
Paul visited several people this month and took them some drops and diabetic supplies. Paul also took Ian to see a cardiologist 2 times this month in Ensenada to get him cleared for surgery. Ian has been sick and today they visited him and he was better and they should be taking him for surgery on Monday.
Sandi Keto had a bake sale this month for the children’s eye project that made about $240 and last week the Neil Diamond Show made about $1200 and additional $625 came in as donations. In addition, Carol Goddard donated $1185 from donations she received from fabric that was given away from Jerry’s collection. After all these donations, there is $7564 in the children’s vision program. Ian will be using $2000 for his surgery. Paul and Mary are going to get in touch with some elementary schools to locate other kids with serious problems. Paul needs to take some other kids back to Ensenada for follow-ups as well.
Paul and Mary believe there should be about 20 new patients after the Eye Clinic on 4/27
Paul and Mary received $1,240 this month for the General Eye Fund giving a balance of $20,072 This will allow them to continue surgeries when the Rotary Grant is exhausted. Out of the $109,000 Rotary Grant, there is about $45,000 left on the grant

June talked about the importance of Intake sheets on projects. Procedure for forms
An intake form is needed for any new person we are serving. Per John Gilbert you can get one from Perla at the senior center if you are in town. Or request one from June Martin. The original is to be filled out and returned to June for our files, this also allows the group to keep track of which projects are completed or still on going; and the head of the work project will get a copy and record the progress of the work project. When the project is finished that intake form will be returned to June who will get a copy back to Perla for her records.
Eric Hodel is to be cc on any communication regarding the projects.
If you come across someone who you think qualifies for our assistance you can get their name, address, phone number and any information about the project to be done and send it to June and she will create an intake form and pass it on to the person in charge of the project.
WORK PROJECTS – submitted by Harry Projects worked on in February
Romero and Maria – completed
A lady in our community met with Eric and Harry about the needs of a family of 5 that has a roof that needs repairs – south of town – She asked if they would walk around the home and offer their expertise and that she will pay for all the expenses for this family’s project. Eric and Harry did their walk thru and met with the guys from Nuevo Cancion. Nuevo Cancion will be working on the roof. That is what helping our community is all about.

Jesus – his roof is really leaking bad. Arturo looked at it. Eric and Harry thought Jesus owned the property but found out that his son owns the property. John from 99+1 has a team coming out and some of them are in construction. John’s team will be helping Jesus out.
